Are you waiting for him to go potty before you bring him back in? Are you taking him to the same spot and using the same words every time?

He goes all different places when I walk him I cannot get him to do it in the same spot cause he doesn't like to be close to me when he relieves himself and he does both before I put him in his crate

I think that a 7 week old puppy needs to go to the bathroom a lot more frequently than every 2 to 4 hours, also how long are you keeping him in the crate? If it is too long he may think that it is OK to go in the crate. This may also happen if you purchased the pup from a pet store where the puppies are confined in cages.

When you have him out, it is important to keep him moving except when he stops to sniff. The crate is basically for when you can't watch him. He needs to be out of it where you can observe the signs of needing to go out and take him out. Avoid leaving him in the crate more than 4-5 hours except at night. If nobody is around to give him a mid day break, try to find a neighbor or a professional dog walker.

Ok that helps a lot because I have had a lot of people tell me that when you get a pup crate him all the time except when you take him out and at feeding times have you ever heard of this sounds CRUEL to me?

Yes I have seen that and many other things that are different from what I have been trained to do and have found works. Look at the thread on introducing puppies to bones. Could be why some people insist using a crate at all is cruel, and why some dogs do poorly in crates.

Hi Davis Daddy, I also have a miniature dachshund, He is now 2 years old... but we got him as a puppy. During the day he was gated to the laundry room and I used a potty pad. Not sure how those things work, but they do... when I was home, I took him out once an hour and praised praised praised him when he went #1 was potty and #2 was referred to as "good potty". He always got a treat afterwards. I even left a potty pad by the back door in his early months when I was home and he would use it. As I said, he is 2 now... we have no potty problems... but all the books I read said it is up to YOU to train him and if he has an accident it is YOUR fault. So, don't blame him if he has an accident. I hope my information has been helpful, our dachshund is now a part of the family! I hope you enjoy yours as much as we enjoy ours. PS. The best book for us was Dachshunds for Dummies.

I also have a miniature Dachshund (8 months old) , and has NEVER done anything in his crate. Do you have anything inside the crate, like a towel or padded matt? If so, remove it. They shouldn't feel anything soft under their feet. I let my dog out on the patio for 20 min. and he won't pee or poop BUT if I walk him he will pee and poop as soon as he steps foot in the grass. Hope this helps!

Hi Davis,
I have a mini too. He is about a year old. I can tell you that house training him took a lot of time and consistency. It also took an eagle eye to spy when he had to go and to take him out before he went. Maintain a schedule with him when it comes to training. Always out first thing in the morning, after breakfast, before going in the crate, immediately after getting out of the crate, before dinner time, after dinner, before bed.
My doxie is so used to the schedule now that when he is done eating he runs to the door. Hang in there. It takes time, but it will happen.

He will go outside even though he uses the potty pads at times. I just made sure to put the pad by the back door that we use to take him out to go potty. He has been the easiest of all dogs to potty train... I sure hope you have the same luck... they are darling!

I do agree 100% Consistency/Schedule...
