It was a good weekend for the drive-by media, the only "positive" story in my paper regarding Republicans was Domenici's call for a change of course in Iraq. Meanwhile, they were sure to tell us about every disaster in Iraq, Giuliani's statement that he wouldn't support a flat tax, and an op-ed by The Goracle's former campaign manager, Donna Brazile, on how the GOP is losing "the all-American financial arms race (http://washingtontimes.com/article/20070709/COMMENTARY/107090016)."

What I particularly liked was the hatchet job on Fred Thompson (http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/front/4950280.html) and the article on "Cheney fatigue (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/07/07/AR2007070700564.html)." Don't be shocked now, but "Cheney has approval ratings now that are as low as _ or lower _ than the president's."

On Thompson, apparently Nixon thought he was "dumb as hell," and he "comes across as a partisan willing to cooperate with the Nixon White House's effort to discredit the committee's star witness."

Isn't it amazing how the media is taking such pot shots at a guy that's not even in the race yet?

I think GOP strategist - and wife of James Carville - Mary Matalin, got the best quote out of all this though, "As the effectiveness of Bush-bashing winds down as a `vision' for their future, Cheney-bashing is their last breath as a substitute for principles upon which to forge an agenda to lead the country."

I hear she's likely to help out in a Thompson campaign. Think she can handle it?

Keep in mind, Steve, that these are the same folks who thought Reagan was stupid and senile. They are also the folks who alternately claim that Bush is the dumbest hick on earth and the most Machiavellian schemer in Presidential history. If they think Thompson is stupid, then I get the feeling that he's an even better candidate than I thought.

Now... can Matlin handle a Thompson campaign? Oh, hell yeah!!

Good point, I have been amazed at how much credit they've given such a blithering idiot as Bush for managing to install his "regime" and gain so much power and control.

I think the two will make quite a formidable pair.

By the way, Matt Towery made a case for Kay Bailey Hutchinson for VP (http://www.townhall.com/columnists/MattTowery/2007/06/28/hutchison_for_vice_president) last week. Good move?

Did you see the Opus hit piece on Thompson ?

The bigger potential damage to Thompson is that he possibly lobbied for an abortion rights group during GHW Bush's term.

Worse case ;he got an epiphany and changed his position to pro-life. Think that can't happen ? Just ask Norma McCorvey aka Jane Roe .
