I recently signed a lease on July 3, 2007. However, the landlord did not give me a copy of the lease or receipt for the first months lease. He said that he will bring a copy of the lease and will give me the receipt but I forgot to get the receipt. The problem is, the house need some work and I mentioned to the landlord that I will tile the kitchen and paint the interior of the house, for waiving the security deposit of 800.00. The landlord and I did a walk through of the home and pointed out what he will do; however, the maintenance guy said the landlord told him to stop until the work that I will do be in writing. His work include finishing the bathrooms, closets, electrical wiring, and removing the burglar window and door. What recourse do I have? I will like to get out of lease and get my money back because I never lived in the home.

Hello press:

You signed the lease and you paid a deposit. That makes a legal contract. You're not going to get out scott free. You may, however, be able to get out for just the month you paid. You're going to need to negotiate your way out and then get it in writing.
