We are needing to install a chandelier that we can turn on and off independently of the wall switch. I am guessing we will need to install a pull chain kit, but am a little unsure how to proceed. Would we need to drill a hole into the cap of the lighting fixture for the pull chain to come through? Or is there another way to accomplish this? Thanks.

Yes, you can do that, and wire the pullchain in series with the light.

Thanks, that's what I thought. We'll give it a try!

Next question: We got the chandelier hung... everything seems to be in order, except that when we use the pull chain to turn the chandelier off, it throws the power on that circuit. If we turn the circuit back on with the power on the chandelier still off, nothing will come on (on that circuit). If we pull the chain again to turn the chandelier on, and then switch the circuit back on, it all comes on again. In other words, if the power on the chandelier is off, everything else is off. The pull chain we used is a simple 2-wire switch, we wired one of the wires to the bundle of black wires, and the other wire to the bundle of white wires. I switched the two wires (from the switch) around and it still does the same thing. Is there a simple solution to this problem? Thanks again for your help.

You didn't wire it correctly.
How many wires come from your chandelier, and how many from the ceiling?

That's what I thought. There are just two wires coming from the ceiling, black and white, plus the grounding wire. From the chandelier, there are also two, at least at the ceiling. Down at the bottom where we installed the pull chain, there are 6 black (one for each of the bulbs, plus the one coming down the chain from the ceiling) and 6 white, like the black. All of the blacks are bundled together, as are all of the whites. We bundled one of the wires from the pull chain in with the blacks, and the other with the whites. Then we tried switching those two around, with the same result. Thanks again for your help.

Ok. Black from ceiling to one pullchain wire. Other pullchain wire to all the chandelier blacks. Chandelier whites to ceiling white.

Does it matter which pull chain wire goes where? One of them is labeled LOAD. Thanks.

Load would go to the ceiling wire, but it doesn't really matter.

You are so amazing. That did the trick. Thanks so much!
