I currently live outside the US and I recently obtained an L-1 visa. I briefly visited the US after this to inscribe myself at Social Security Office but now I'm back in my homecountry and afte several weeks still no news on Social Secutity Number (SSN). My question: can I move to the US and start working for my US employer without the SSN? Alternatively; can I move to the US and await my SSN there and once I have it start working for my US employer?

You are eligible to begin working with just your L-1A visa and I-94. The social security number is what your employer will need to properly report your taxes to the US government. So you should follow-up on this with the Social Security Office.
