Thanks for the suggestion of replacing the filter with one mounted behink the refrigerator. The Frigidaire model which I have has a filter at the top right of the compartment which slides in and snaps into place. It is the "PureSource2" filter. Installing the filter opens the valves which permit water to flow. Without the filter installed, there is no way to get water for the water dispenser or icemaker. I need some kind of bypass which will slide into the place where the filter normally goes, and depress the valves. Do you have any ideas?

You're not the first person to ask that question. It's a common enough problem that they make a bypass for just what you're talking about Check out refrigerator water filters (http://www.discountfilters.com/refrigerator-water-filters/), they should be able to help.
