How do I get the valve out to replace the washer in a 30 year old house? I thought I could open it all the way and screw it out but it doesn't want to come out. Am I doing it wrong or is there a trick? Don't want to bust the old copper pipe in the wall if I can help it. Thanks!

Hey Rob,
While you didn't say I'm going to assume that your valve has two knobs and not one handle.
Shut the water off to the valve and remove the knob and chrome cover plate.
You will see a brass nut, (the bonnet packing nut). Unscrew that nut and back the stem and washer assembly out counterclockwise. You may now replace the washer. Before you reinstall the stem and washer you must check the seat for nicks and rough spots. If you find any you must replace the seat as well. If you don't it will just tear up the washer. Good luck.
