I've been having error messages like this: The instruction at "0x01762bf2" referenced memory at "0x01806680". The memory could not be "read" Click on OK to terminate the program. I've written about this error message before in a previous question but I'vre never sent a log file because I didn't know how to do so. I'm hoping by my sending this log file from Hijack this will give someone the info they need to be able to help me fix this problem. I'm running windows XP SP2 and using internet explorer on a presario compaq computer. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Looks like its in your regestry, its probably changing your permissions... Do you have Norton, or mcafee?

I don't have either one. My computer came with Norton but I don't like Norton so I uninstalled it and I now have AVG antivirus.

Lol, you should consider getting norton, and uninstalling AVG, that anti-virus is usually only used as a backup A.V. for when a program such as Norton, or Mcafee crashes...

AVG usually will find the file that crashed Norton/Mcafee, and then you can use the program again...

It looks like your registry is messed up though... How long has Hijack been on there?

And please, with this on here, DO NOT even type in your personal information... don't do any online banking, oor put you credit care number in, and DEFFINITLEY don't use paypal, Hijack is a program that tracks every keystroke you make, thus "hijacking" your personal information.

Haxor50, I'm not sure if there's a misuderstanding or not. I downloaded and installed a program called "hijack this" by a recommendation of someone on a help site so I could get a logfile to send so someone could possibly tell what's wrong and why I'm having error messages and could tell me what to do to fix it. I've only had the program on there for a few days. I was told to get the program, run it, save the logfile and copy and paste it here so someone trying to help could look at the log file and tell me what's wrong.

As far as Norton or mcgafee antivirus I didn't like either one. If avg isn't very good can you recommend a better one?

Yeah kat555lady, don't fret, it's got nothing to do with hijackthis, that's a trusted program!

Can you just give us a little bit more information... like when does this happen? Randomly, or when you try to open a program? What is the title bar of the error?

At the moment I can't tell you how to fix the problem, but I can tell you why it's happening;

From Microsoft's Knowledge Base (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/262490):

This behavior occurs because the operating system does not allocate a large enough buffer for the maximum string length permitted. When the data is greater than the buffer size, the Winlogon service terminates abnormally and your computer generates the error message.

Haxzor50, Thanks and don't worry about it, no apology necessary

Here is an article from the almighty Microsoft Knowledge Base;

You may receive a "The memory could not be read" error message when you click certain Web site links in Internet Explorer 6 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/899811/en-us)

It has a hotfix and a workaround for your problem! I suggest you read it all carefully!

If you're unsure as of what to do, or need more help, don't hesitate to ask!

OOH im sorry, there is a virus called Hijack 5.0 and the Program "Hijack This"

my misunderstanding, i am very sorry...

First Hijaack 5.0 is a file conversion program a legitimate one. Second Hijack This is a well known and respected anti-spyware tool.

But this is not the first time you have answered questions where you clearly did not know the answer. As I recall you are a young teen. You are fairly knowledgeable about computers but you don't seem to have a clue how little you actually know. We take pride in the quality of the advice we give here. Its very nice that you want to help and we do appreciate contributors. But you need to be absolutely sure of your facts before you give out bad advice.
