I remember being in firstgrade watching this so it was about 1991. I remember a little boy I don't know if he was an orphan or lived with family but they were in the city. He found a golden apple, it took him through a portal to a kingdom where his father who he had never met was the king. I remember a sword fight, please help

Could be 1987's Mio in the Land of Far Away. A review at digitallyobsessed.com notes: "As he passes the confectionery, Mrs. Lundin (Linn Stokke), the shopkeeper, who has a soft spot for Mio, gives the boy an apple, along with a very important and magic postcard, addressed to the king of the Land of Faraway. When a great spirit appears and carries the young boy away on his beard, his adventures in the fantastic have only just begun. "

That's the movie all right! This is one of my all-time favorites! When Mio's reading the postcard, he reads that Mrs. Lundin is telling the King that his son is on his way home, and that he'll be bearing the sign of an apple of gold. The apple is a normal one at first, and then when he's about to eat it, it shines and Mio drops it out of fright. Then the apple rolls to a bottle where you see something moving in it, so Mio opens it and a giant head pops out, telling Mio that he's the one who the King has sent the spirit (the head) to fetch. I highly recommend this movie to people because it's a classic! :)

If you like the film then you should read the book 'MIO, MY SON'. I read it when I was fairly young and its still one of the best that I have read up to date.
