Hi..
I have a 6 month old puppy that has been really good with hourse training. About two weeks ago he started peeing in the house right after we bring him inside. I discipline him and put him right outside again, then he's usually fine... until the next day. At first I was worried that he might be doing it because he's angry.. that he didn't get to go for a walk, or I didn't play when he wanted to. But today I was playing with him and he stopped right in his tracks in the living room and peed just staring at me. I still desciplined him, but I'm wondering if maybe he can't hold it, or not. If anyone has any suggestions as to why he might be doing this, or how to stop it, please, let me know. My email is [email protected].
Thanks

It never hurts to start with a vet check. It really sounds to me like what you need to talk to the vet about is neutering him. The timing is about right for him to be responding to his hormones by challenging your leadership. Neutering isn't a cure all, but highly effective with dogs that mark in the house.

In addition, you need to provide better leadership. Dogs see all the people and dogs in the household as a pack with each having their own rank in the pack and a top dog. Life is much easier if the 2 legged pack members outrank the 4 legged ones. You can learn to play the role of top dog by reading some books or going to a good obedience class. A good obedience class or book is about you being top dog, not about rewarding standard commands with a treat. Start at Raising Your Dog with the Monks of New Skete (http://www.dogsbestfriend.com/) For more on being top dog, see Establishing and Keeping Alpha Position, Letting your dog know you are the boss (http://www.dogbreedinfo.com./topdogrules.htm)

Hi, I just have a suggestion/question about your dog. When I was training my dog to go outside. I would say" Lets go potty! Then I would take him out and when he went I would praise him like crazy....."did you go potty?. Oh what a good boy!" I would pat him and rub his head. It didn't take him long to figure out that he would get praise every time he went outside. Does he get praise when he has appropriate behaviour, or the only attention that he gets is when you disipline him? The other thing is does he go in the same place each time? You may need a enzyme cleaner which actually absorbs the urine so he can't smell it. Good luck! It will pay off in the end. Oh, and you can always get a doggy door... I work long hours and since I got a door... no problems
