Removing as much sense input as possible should be 1st thought:
Sight: Eyes closed.
Sound: Be in as quiet a place as possible.
Smell: Don't do it in the kitchen when something good is being baked :)
Touch: Be very still so that you don't feel anything
Taste: Of course don't be eating or chewing gum.
... just my 1.5 cents worth.

Don't chase your thoughts, let them flow in and through and out of your mind without attaching to them. Don't do anything, just be.

Meditation is the kind of deep, concentrated thinking in which a person seriously reflects on past experiences, ponders and muses over current matters, or thoughtfully contemplates possible future events. To meditate properly, a person needs to be free from distractions, alone with his thoughts so to speak. Some people chose the early morning hours to meditate while others prefer the early evening hours. There is compelling reason to meditate on up building and beneficial things for by doing this one would not be inclined to act foolishly or give foolish answers. Most important reason of all is that your answers will come from the heart and not be something that you will regret later on.
