We just moved here from germany with two dogs a one year old malimute and a 4 month old pit puppy. We are staying with family and they had a dog in the backyard before we got here who died of parvo and I was wondering how if my pups will get this disease and if so how soon will we notice any signs? They have been vacinated but not sure if the puppy had the shot for parvo... please tell me how soon she might if she would pick up parvo?

Go ahead now and get the 4 month old a parvo shot. Even if it has had them before, they may not have taken. Frequently parvo is included in a combination shot, DLCPP or such. How soon? Right after your puppy digs in the wrong spot and unearths buried virus. At least with a 4 month old Pit, there is enough dog to have a better chance of surviving it. I have heard parvo will survive in the soil anywhere from 6 months to 12 years. Bleach and water is all that will kill it. For more on Parvo, see Canine Parvovirus, What you should know about (http://www.avma.org/communications/brochures/canine_parvo/parvo_brochure.asp)

Further to labman's response, the parvovirus can also survive frost.

You should be very careful, this sickness is brutal, and not many survive.Vaccinations aren't always reliable.I hate to say this but that ground is toxic.
