Okay, so I know some of you are freaking out because I am actually asking a question in this category, but I heard something recently that makes me want to laugh so hard, but before I do I thought I would check with you all.
Okay, so you all know about my father's death and the family has all been together the past couple of weeks. Well, my sister is 7 months pregnant and before the funeral and before all of the wonderful food was sent over Mom was cooking hot dogs on the grill (oh yeah, it was Memorial Day Weekend). When she asked my sister how many she wanted... My sister said that she can't eat hot dogs.
I asked her why as she used to LOVE hot dogs. She told me that pregnant women are not supposed to eat them.
Hmmm, now let's see, I have 4 kids, ate hot dogs with all 4, she has 2 and ate hot dogs with both of them. You know all of the kids are smart, there is nothing physically wrong with them like an extra eyeball on their elbow or anything.
So, if any of you knowledgeable women have heard this, please fill me in before I laugh so hard it hurts.
Is she crazy or is this some new fad?

LOL It's new news to me!

Well, most food are processed these days. Soooo...
I'm sorry I almost PMSL when she said that.
Another one I asked her was "Are you going natural or an epidural?" OMG that response got another chuckle out of me...
"Well, I don't plan on having a C-Section. You see, Natural is vaginal and I plan on natural."
Okay, what gives? I mean you all know I know my stuff... But?
Whew, I could not believe half the stuff I was hearing. LOL

I think, J_9, that the premise is that hot dogs and sausages can be dangerous because they are usually undercoooked. I believe it is recommended that they either be avoided or cooked VERY well. It's probably better for the baby anyhow. Hot dogs are loaded in nitrates and not exactly the safest food out there. At any rate apparently now the FDA suggests pregnant women avoid hot dogs - even deli meats and lunch meats - unless they are reheated/cooked well.

Very interesting Didi, however the hot dogs we have here in the US, at least the ones we buy in our family, are precooked so reheating is not even a necessity. Although it would be awfully yucky (excuse my professional speech there) to eat a hot dog that hasn't been cooked.
She will eat luncheon meats, but swears that hot dogs are a danger to her and her baby.

Hmmmm... just found an interesting article on this. According to 'Is it Safe to Eat Deli Meats When I'm Pregnant?' (http://www.babycenter.com/plus/safe/quest.jhtml?iisQuestId=1136792) there is an illness called listeriosis which pregnant women are 20 times more likely to get than other healthy adults and discusses the effects on moms. Amazing all this new stuff they are coming out with. It's a wonder ANY of us over 25 are still alive!
Just as an aside... when Terry was diagnosed with gastric cancer they told us that his hot dog habit could have been one of the contributing factors.

I first thought that hot dogs are a choking hazard. Hmmm. Then I thought it might be because of the nitrites in hot dogs. Hmmmmmmmmmmmm. Then I googled. Like grammadidi said, it's listeriosis.

Very interesting. I knew I could count on you for some research Didi, LOL
You see though that she has 4 cats and has no problem changing the litter etc... and she's afraid of HOT DOGS??

Wondergirl (https://www.askmehelpdesk.com/../members/wondergirl.html) agrees: Maybe someone else changes the litter? Nope I saw her do it these past few weeks. I had to remind her that if she can't eat hot dogs, she surely should not be chaning litter. LOL

People just seem to latch on to some things and ignore others. It's like people who give up something they love to eat because the doctor suggested they should cut back on it, yet they continue to smoke, which will kill them. Sheesh, I would definitely tell my hubby HE had to clean the kitty litter!! Your sis needs some lessons here. Hahahahaha! :D

Wow, my doctors never said or mentioned any of this to me.
I guess this can happen only if the hot dogs (or other meats)
Are contaminated and eaten raw, right? [edit: or not reheated]
Now I was warned about the liter box... 9 months of pure bliss... hubby wasn't to happy though! LOL

LOL, I did end up getting her hubby to change the litter, but I was still freaking about the hot dogs. I guess I still am. Well, see I learned something new today. Listeria huh, interesting.

Believe it or not it can also be found in soft cheeses... I asked my dr about it and he looked at me and laughed... Told me that I could eat anything I wanted because the US has strickter guidelines about the processing of food... He did however tell me that I was not under any circumstances to clean the litterbox... Hotdogs?? I'm lmfao...

I can't even remember all the things my daughter decided she couldn't eat (or touch) when she was pregnant. There's somebody out there to warn people away from just about anything. It has probably always been this way, but the internet makes it worse.

Why don't you just mind your own damn business. I guess you should have thought to do the same rather than bashing me here.
It sounds like you are the now it all Guess what, unlike you, I don't know it all, that is why I was here asking if anyone heard of this and why it is. I never said it was not legit, I was just curious.
just let her live her life and let her have the child.
And how do you know I am not, since apparently you seem to know all about me and my sister.
As for you having 4 children that doesn't make you an expert let alone a doctor.
Well, having 4 children does make me a little bit of an expert, along with my nursing education, my title here as Health Expert, as well as the children I have helped deliver, including her two daughters.
So just leave it alone and for once be supportive lady
Since you seem to know me so well, would you mind telling me how I am not supportive? You do know then that I will be flying to her town tomorrow to be with her for a doctor's appointment on Monday. You do also know that I suggested she go to her baby shower in San Fancisco California on the Saturday after our father's death because there was nothing here she could do as I took care of all funeral arrangements so that she could attend her shower and so that Mom could grieve.
I am so glad that you, as a noob here, knows me and my family so well. It is people like you that I thank for teaching me to show respect where I did not know respect before. LMFAO, PMSL!!
LenaMarie, please take your pisspoor attitude somewhere else it is not needed here.

Oh, yeah, let me remind you of this post:
What was I thinking I can't be a mom, I don't know anything about having a child. let alone raising one. I thought I had more time, my husband and I just started trying last month and I am already 5 weeks pregnant. ( Talk about good sperm) What am I supposed to do now? I am completely freaked oujt by the thought of me becoming a mom. Please someone tell me this is my hormones talking.
Lenamarie
So, sweetie, I think I am a little more of an expert than you.

Why don't you just mind your own damn business. It sounds like you are the now it all, just let her live her life and let her have the child. Because last time I checked you aren't carrying it. If she wants to give you those reason for why she wont eat hot dogs then just live with it. As for you having 4 children that doesn't make you an expert let alone a doctor. So just leave it alone and for once be supportive lady
Wow your hormones are raging lady there really was no need for that at all

Look, you don't know whether I am supportive of my sister. You haven't a clue. You don't know me, you don't know her.
Just so you do know... I am VERY VERY supportive of her, extremely so. I am also very proud of her, she is a wonderful wife, sister, and mother.
I was only asking a question as I had not heard of this before and here you come in bashing me.
Take your attitude somewhere else.

Guess what, sis was here when I typed this. See how much you do know about me?
We have a wonderful relationship, caring, loving, but most of all FUN!!
Do you know how to have fun? I didn't think so.
Yes, we tease each other almost constantly.
Oh, hell, I am defending myself to a hormonal stranger. LMAO.

As well let me tell you that I wouldn't never find my sister on a web page like this saying these thing
"Another one I asked her was "Are you going natural or an epidural?" OMG that response got another chuckle out of me...." Oh ya and the saying about how hard you laughed thats not right. What kind of sister are you. Sorry if I have offended you but I just spoke my mind. I guess my husband was right I should of never said nothing. Have good life you and your sister
Blimey if that's you speaking your mind id hate to meet you on a bad day, you know what makes me cross is the fact you jumped before you even got to know the site or the person you let loose on, we don't take kindly to being abused by newbies its not nice and you end up with a lot of community getting really annoyed I suggest you don't attack anyone without good cause or you just won't last long around here at all.

Janine, you know, I didn't eat hot dogs with my first two girls, simply because I grew a hatred for them, even the smell of them, so strange since I typically love them. Then, with my 3rd, I couldn't get enough hot dogs, I mean, I was at Costco on a daily basis just slammin them, and wouldn't you know, my third was born with a lil-built-in hot dog, yep, I had a boy! So, maybe that's why she's not supposed to partake of the dog?
Oh yeah, and she's your sister, so you can say any damn thing you want and ask any question that tickles your fancy! I have spoken!!

I just wondered what the change in eating and not eating them was. She did not know when I asked her, so I was pretty sure I could get the answer here. She also did not know that she should avoid certain luncheon meats for the same reason.
I will be going with her to the doctor's on Monday (I am so proud her doctor is at Rutger's University! Yeee Haww, the best of the best) and we will be asking then as to what the change is with hot dogs.
Boy you get concerned about your sister, present it in a comical way (you all know my sense of humor anyway) and all heck breaks loose. LMAO.

Wow, I missed out on a lot on this thread! Hah, those three pages filled up fast! Since this is a site made for the sole purpose of people posting QUESTIONS, there is absolutely no reason you should not be able to post a question, being concerned over a matter dealing with your sister and her unborn baby. There are new things coming out every day, and its hard to keep on top of these things, especially if you aren't pregnant yourself when they come out, so you don't have your doctors talking to you about them. There have been WAY more ridiculous questions posted on this site, and there was no reason for those rude responses from her towards you. Especially considering all the effort you take in behalf of all on the site. That said, I have never heard of the hot dog thing before. I have heard of listeria/listeriosis(can be found in unpasteurized milk and cheeses as well as raw/undercooked meat, fish, shellfish, poultry, eggs, and unwashed raw veggies and deli meats) And looking up info on listeria it says that hot dogs and cold cuts might contain it and that ready-cooked meats should be heated to 165 before eating them, as a precaution. My doctor never told me anything like that, and I just had my baby, so it wasn't a while ago or anything. He warned against under cooked food, but that's just about it. So perhaps its something that is just beginning to surface as more important, and perhaps doctors will be saying it more and more as time passes?
