I became a resident alien of US starting January 2006 and then left US permanently to come back to Italy August 2006.
I was living in New York city. Now, for 2006:
1) Which form should I file for NY state taxes?
2) Should I file also IT360-1 (since I left NY city) ?
2) Should I have my standard deduction prorated for 8 months (Jan-Aug)?
Thanks!

SInce you were a visiting scholar, you should file as a non-resident of BOTH New York state and NYC.

I do not think the NY standard deduction is prorated.

As noted with the dual-status answer, the NY state tax return is the most complicated state tax return among the state tax returns. That being the case, I recommend you get professional help.

I am available for consultation. Contact me at the email address below. You will find my fees most reasonable, and the fact that you are in Italy and I am in Atlanta to be of little hindrance.
