View Full Version : Furnace Fan Motor not turning ON

Hi,

The fan motor connected to my furnace blower (via a belt) is no longer turning ON reliably.

I can hear the call for the motor to turn ON, but the mottor just "humms" then turns OFF.
Then the cycle repeats itself.

If I manually push the motor pulley during the "humm" then the motor runs fine.
Again, the motor does not seem to be able to START by itself.

I usually keep the fan switch on the thermostat set to the "AUTO" position.
Not sure if it is relevant but note however, that the fan no longer turns ON if I select the "Manual" position (but maybe it is just humming and I can't hear it).

Any suggestion as to what the cause may be?

Thanks.

First check The capacitor. If you can start the fan with a push, your capacitor has failed

Most belt drives are not capacitor run motors, it sounds like the motor is going bad.

I agree, Sounds like it's time to replace the motor...
