When my son was around one years old he would get this green/yellow mucas from his eyes so much he couldn't open them in the morning. It lasted for a while but eventually went away by the time he was two. Now he is four and it is happening again, but this time he does have a cough and slightly runny nose. I figure it has to do with his cold, but I don't know anyone else that has eye mucas when they have a cold and can't open their eyes in the morning because of it.

He does not have any redness in his eyes and they do not seem to be bothering him except for when he can't open them.

What is causing this? How do I stop it?

You need to take him to a doctor, did you really just say this happened when he was 2 and you just left it alone until it went away?

It's most likely an eye infection

You need to have him checked by a doctor. This could be connected to his sinus, it also could be connected to his tear duct being to small. Another thing is to consider is Conjuctivits "pinkeye". This can be a serious problem... I know a boy that had this condition and it was not treated properly and the infection went into his kidneys and he lost both of his kidneys. Infections are not to be treated lightly and green or yellow mucus is a sure sign of infection. I would have checked today ASAP! Good luck

Responding to the answer that was just given: I took him to a doctor for this when he was little, but like now his eyes didn't look red or anything, and the doctor said it happened sometimes that mucas came out eyes just like the nose when someone had a cold. But it kept happening when he wasn't sick before and then he's had colds since then where there was no eye mucas. So I'm just confused.

Pink eye is spread by bacteria from a contaminated object coming in contact with the eye.The contaminated object could be a finger,a washcloth,a pillowcase... Children are not as careful as adults about washing their hands. My son just had pinkeye, and his eyes were sealed when he woke up.His doctor said it is very common to have another sickness with pinkeye. His other sickness was strep throat.Nice combo, not.

Sorry I am jumping in a little late on this post, I just got home yesterday from a period away.

Conjunctivitis is extremely extremely contagious. Left untreated it can damage the conjunctiva of the eye.

Please seek treatment if you have not already.
