Chemistry is the foundation for anatomy and physiology and pathophysiology. It is important to understand these concepts. There are many aspects of nursing that require some knowledge of chemistry such as blood gasses, IV fluids, drugs, anesthesiology, etc.
Also, electrolyte hommeostasis and action potentials (to understand heart physiology and read EKGs) make a lot more sense. Understanding chemistry allows the nurse to be able to think proactively.

If the R.N. would want to go further in his or her education, for example to the M.S.N. or Physician's Assistant degrees, knowledge of chemistry is vital.
