Hi,

I had someone do my taxes for me. I gave them all of my documents. On one of the documents was my mother's SS# because we share in a mortgage together. The tax person put that SS# on my return instead of mine (which was on all of the 5 other pieces of documentation). I was unaware of this until I called the IRS to find out why I hadn't received my return. They told me they never received my return. So I went to the copy that I received from my tax guy. It was then I noticed that it wasn't my SS# on the 1040 at all. Through process of elimination I figured out that it was my mother's.

So the IRS has never received my return. However I don't want to complicate matters. The agent I spoke with sent an in-house letter to my service department to vaguely explain my situation. What should I do, I was looking to pay for my wedding with this money?

Please help!

Go back to the original preparer and demand that he/she fix the problem.

Errors like that happen, but the tax preparer should take responsibility for the error and fix it!

Further, you can make an argument that he/she should front you the amount of the refund with NO fees or interest because his/her error cost you a timely refund. It may not fly, but all he/she can do is say NO! If they refuse take responsibility for the error, report him/her to the IRS.
