We moved into our house last summer and it had be renovated with a new Goodman CKL24-1L system, (~3 months old at the time of move in). Our home is small, maybe about 1000 sq ft. However, we had some trouble with it last summer, it would often have trouble keeping the temperature low. We would have it set for 77F (nothing too demanding) and it would maybe get to 79 and be running ALL day, and would only shut off late at night on hotter days. We hadn't used the unit so far this year, until yesterday when we came home and it was 88 degrees inside the house. So I turned the thermostat to cool (at about 8pm), and within an hour it dropped to 84 degrees, by the time we went to bed at 12am it was still 84. I got up in the middle of the night and the unit was still running and was still 84 degrees.

Is this a coolant issue? Is the unit bad? I like to think I'm fairly handy but my skills with HVAC are fairly slim.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

It sounds like it may be low on freon. How is the airflow? Have you replaced the filter?

So would it just have a bad leak? Last season after we first moved in, we had it checked out and they said it had freon, but it still wasn't cooling. (As I mentioned it would run all day just to keep the temperature around 80+ or so) Could they have read something wrong? Is there another potential problem?

We just changed the air filter last week. We change it regularly every 3 months or so.

Thanks for your help.

Well, if they checked the freon and it was OK then something else is wrong. Does it seem like you have good airflow? It could be a few different things... If you have a thermometer stick it in a register while the air is running and let me know what kind of tempature you are getting. Did you have this same problem last year and a technician told you there were no problems?

It may sound like a dumb question but is the out side unit running when you call for cooling?

Yes, at least the fan is on. But on the lines that run from it to the house, I would expect some condensation, but there isn't any.

A/C unit was fixed May 28th, 2012... since then the A/C hasn't worked but smells like rag- stuff coming out the vents, that's when my stomach felt like a cannonball hit it and my intestines were being raked over... doctor says viral pneumonia but blood and x-ray tests showed nothing and lungs were clear, so?
When in the house within 1/2 hour I start feeling sick again, better outside or when the windows are all open, but Direct Energy has recommended the blow to automatically be on "all the time" to the Ignorant in the house, he likes to pay for stuffy air instead of opening the windows when it's 20 and raining, to clear the air quicker, faster and for free.

So I'am sick to my stomach all the time and it's only in the house, can't open windows unless those doors are shut (which makes a hell of a lot of sense).

What is the blow coming out the vents when the Fan and A/C is off. Smells and tastes like rag-, my mouth is metallic tasting, can bearly eat, and might die from this chemical induced poison , but Direct Energy doesn't care less about educating people and in Canada the Medical System is bats clueless about telling people the truth of the cause of people's problems in the summer!

Oh, by the way, Direct Energy has been over 3 times the A/C unit was fixed this morning, went from 30 to 20 rained all day, the had the A/C on ALL DAY rather than opening the window, but I still smell scummy , and have a really HUGE avid hate of the vents.
What is this?
