To be exact: regarding question 2, I mean a regular return or an "amended" return.

Last question first: Yes, you have the automatic 2-month extension.

You can check on the status of your refund by accessing the "Where is my Refund?" application on Internal Revenue Service (http://www.irs.gov).

Otherwise, a phone call to the IRS will confirm that they got the return.
