View Full Version : A House majority divide against itself cannot stand

The Repubs ;22 Days after Matt Gaetz and his gang of 8 idiots ousted Speaker McCarthy have FINALLY selected a Speaker of the House. He is 3 term Louisiana Rep Mike Johnson. He is a loyal Trumpian MAGA "conservative" . He is most noted for being in the defense team of both Trump impeachments .

He also has a solid conservative record on social issues . He has voted against Ukraine spending . All good.

So given that ;all is kumbaya and the Repubs can get back to being the majority passing the majority agenda ?

Not so fast .

There is a lot of bitterness in the ranks over the events of the last 22 days

House Ways and Means Chair Jason Smith (R-Mo.) slammed Gaetz for picking the fight.

The blood is on [Gaetz's] hands for 22 wasted days for him to join with 100% of the Democrat Party to remove the speaker of the House. He's all about himself,"

Patrick McHenry (R-N.C.) who was the care taker Speaker during the fight said the McCarthy ouster was "perhaps the dumbest set of politics for decision-making a majority party in this institution could make."

Some are saying they will have to become a minority party in the House to fix the divisions .

Johnson for his part met with Clueless Joe and Yertle McConnell to try to forge something of a working relationship.

The Gaetz wing did it's putsh and has it's Speaker . They will find that governing is the hard part .

Already there could be issues between Johnson and Yertle. Johnson wants to fund Israel in a stand alone bill. Yertle just loves those omnibus spending bills where pork can be hid in thousands of pages of legislation that no one reads.

House Conservatives I believe would rather shut the government down than pass a continuing resolution comprehensive bill. That was their message in ousting McCarthy.

House Conservatives I believe would rather shut the government down than pass a continuing resolution comprehensive bill. That was their message in ousting McCarthy.I could be all for it, but we all know how it would end. The MSM would characterize it as evil conservatives, because of their obstinate positions, are willfully shutting down the government and thus injuring all of the poor folks.

Well what do you know .... The House passed a spending bill How did Speaker Johnson pull that off ? The same way Speaker McCarthy did.....no cuts . He got enough Dem support to counter the conservatives who opposed it . Same as McCarthy. It cost McCarthy his job . it won't cost Johnson his.

The big question is why ?

Pop quiz: What’s the difference between the bipartisan stopgap funding bill that passed the House Tuesday under new Speaker Mike Johnson, and the September equivalent passed under former leader Kevin McCarthy? Answer: Nothing but the self-defeating Republican drama.

The national public will to do the sacrificing necessary to have a balanced budget is simply not there. From where I sit, the vast majority of folks don't even want to talk or read about it. It's like the abortion debate. Far too few people have any real interest in the truth.

The gang of idiots have driven Mike McCarthy out of Congress. He is resigning at years end .

The Repubs had a 3 seat majority before ousting George Santos. McCarthy leaving means they will have a 1 seat majority going into 2024. Rep. Bill Johnson (R-Ohio) is also expected to resign in January . But Rep. Brian Higgins (D-N.Y.) is also expected to leave.

A one vote majority is not a majority .And that is especially true considering how many Repubs cross the aisle in their votes.

The configuration of the House could be significantly changed in 2025 as a slew of Reps from both sides are not seeking reelection,

Repub voters have to suck it up and begin embracing early voting . I admit that I am not a huge fan of it ;but how often do they have to get burned by it before they realize that the changes they want to the process will never happen until they WIN ??????

The latest example of this folly happened yesterday in the New York Special election that was held to replace George Santos .(see above ...he was ousted from Congress by the Repubs).

The Dems did their early voting . The Repubs mostly did not . So what happened yesterday in NY ? There was a snow storm ! That suppressed turn out .

The result is that the Dem candidate Tom Suozzi won the vote further diluting the Repub razor thin majority . Suozzi had held the seat before Santos but had given it up to run for Guv. Now he returns to Congress . He ran a trojan horse campaign seizing many of the issues the Repubs hold . (tough on crime ...... border security etc) The district is on Long Island in the NYC burbs . His win could bolster the Dems prospects in city collar counties which would help them greatly in key states like Pennsylvania and Georgia.

How important was that seat to the Repubs ? Let's put it this way. Yesterday the House Repubs voted in favor of impeaching DHS Sec Mayorkas . That vote was a one vote majority with a handful of Repubs siding with the Dems.

The Repub candidate had a compelling life story that should've been an attractive American story . Mazi Pilip was born in Ethiopia ;an Orthodox Jew. She was airlifted out of the country in 1991 when she was 12. She later served in the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) . She married a Ukraine-American doctor and moved to the US and became a citizen. Although Suozzi expressed conservative sounding talking points throughout the campaign. It is clear who the real conservative was on issues like immigration and crime .She took tough stands and tried to link him to both Dem failed policies in NY.

We will never know what would've happened if there wasn't a snow storm yesterday. But we do know that the numbers were down on election day.

tomder55
Feb 14, 2024, 05:58 AM
The good news is that Pilip ;a relative unknown when the campaign now has name recognition. She vows to run again in the fall .The Dems have an Israel problem that threatens to blow up their coalition. Running an ex- IDF candidate can only help widen the fissure.

The bad news is that Repubs are notoriously slow learners often resembling Charlie Brown attempting a FG with Lucy holding the ball

Wooohoooo ! The House passed a continuing resolution avoiding a shut down. They did this by stripping the bill of the contentious bits about funding Ukraine and Israel.

As the WSJ writes

Congress has wasted half the fiscal year on government funding—and in the end is passing largely what Mr. McCarthy negotiated a year ago. Such are the realities of divided government, and a House GOP majority with too many Members whose only cause is themselves.

Deja Vu all over again as Yogi said

MTG has introduced a motion to oust Speaker Mike Johnson .

Why ? Well the Repubs passed a $1.2 trillion omnibus spending bill with the help of House Dems The vote was 286-134

Enraged Over Spending Bill, Greene Threatens to Oust Johnson - The New York Times (nytimes.com) (https://www.nytimes.com/2024/03/22/us/politics/greene-oust-johnson-spending-bill.html)

“It’s more of a warning than a pink slip,” Greene told reporters. “I do not wish to inflict pain on our conference and to throw the House in chaos. But this is basically a warning and it’s time for us to go through the process, take our time and find a new speaker of the House that will stand with Republicans and our Republican majority, instead of standing with the Democrats.”

Republicans take a tough vote on funding and face a motion to oust Speaker Mike Johnson (nbcnews.com) (https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/congress/house-republicans-bad-day-greene-motion-vacate-mike-johnson-speaker-rcna144713)

Now it is true that Johnson promised a return to the normal process of individual spending bills brought to the floor, debated, and voted on .Instead of the never ending parade of omnibus bills.

But what is he supposed to do with maybe a 2 vote majority ? The split inside the Repubs guarantees that the only way to get legislation passed is to build a coalition.

As the emperor said 'elections have consequences '

tomder55
Mar 23, 2024, 04:19 AM
And then there was one .

Repub Rep Mike Gallagher(Wisconsin) announced he was bolting shortly after MTG announced she was moving to oust Speaker Johnson. That leaves the Repub majority at one

Gallagher is no back bencher . He is chair of the very important select Committee on China. He had already announced he was not seeking reelection. His sudden departure before the end of his term is a shock.

Two special elections before November can shift the majority to the Dems
In NY April 30 ,the Dems are favored in one ;and the special election to replace Kevin McCarthy in California will have a run off election May 21 .

If the Dems take the House say goodby to any chance of holding Quid Pro Joe accountable for the Biden Crime Family. That would appear to be the biggest consequence since the idiot Repubs have blown any chance to get their agenda passed.

Say hello to Speaker Hakeem Jeffries .

The only good news from this is that he will leave the House past the state deadline to have a special election . So at least the Dems can't take that seat before November .

tomder55
Apr 19, 2024, 04:52 AM
Say hello to Speaker Hakeem Jeffries .

Speaker Johnson is the titular head of a coalition government. But the only agenda being passed is the Dem agenda . Yeah the foreign aid package; with aid to Ukraine , that was passed through Rules committee has Speaker Johnson's name on it .But it would've gone nowhere without the Dems coming to the rescue ;and Clueless Joe's endorsement. 3 Repubs voted against sending it to the floor. But 4 Dems voted with 5 Repubs from the war party to advance the bill .

The Rules committee typically is stacked with loyalists to the Speaker .

At least we have lots and lots of money sitting around idle in the Treasury just waiting to be spent for all of this.

I am convinced that if the crooks we have in Congress had to raise taxes to pay for this spending, then they would either figure out a way to get the money by cuts in other areas, or more likely would just say, "Sorry, but we can't do this." My wife and I reach that conclusion frequently in our own finances. It's really not unusual, Congress.

Marjorie Taylor Greene's attempt to oust Speaker Johnson appears to have fallen flat on it's face before it begins. Go home MTG you have no base of support ;probably not even in your district. She only has 2 backers in Congress for the effort Massie and Gosar. Many of the Dems will cross the aisle to back Johnson.

The Repubs have effectively ceded the power of the speakership to Jefferies. Johnson is doing the best he can with the hand he was dealt. But it means pi$$ing off the likes of MTG .

She asked the Repubs to go home and talk to their constituents . They came back and told her nobody outside the swamp gives a rat's a$$ about her knives out gambit . They want their concerns addressed .

She's slid so far down the totem pole that she has been ousted from the Freedom Caucus and even Trump is distancing himself from her folly.

On Truth Social Trump made an argument I have been making since the split in the House GOP boiled over last year. The ONLY thing that matters at this time is winning ;defeating the Dems ;retaining control of the House and taking the Presidency and Senate.

The time for MTG and the coalition of idiots rebellion may come some time in the future. But what good is their chaos if it ends with a Speaker Jefferies Dem Majority ?

However, right now, Republicans have to be fighting the Radical Left Democrats, and all the Damage they have done to our Country. With a Majority of One, shortly growing to three or four, we’re not in a position of voting on a Motion to Vacate.

Here we go again. Americans voted in Repub majorities in both houses of Congress so they can pass an agenda .

1st Trump started to whittle it away by cherry picking members to join his cabinet .
Then Matt Gaetz resigns over a scandal .

Suddenly instead of a semi-comfortable majority to work with;Speaker Johnson has maybe one depending on which Rep or group of Reps have the knives out today.

So they have maybe 2 days left to pass a continuing resolution (CR) to keep the government operating through the end of the year and into the new term.

Now maybe it is just me . But a continuing resolution by definition should be a simple question. Do we continue to fund the government for a specific period of time under the terms the last CR was passed ?

But NO !!!!! . They basically trotted out a 1500 page wish list and presented it to the House with a whole 2 days to read it !!! (They even added a pay raise for themselves because they are doing such a fine job </sarc> They call it a cost of living adjustment .They earn $174,000 a year now for screwing up the country . The COLA would add $6,000 more monopoly bucks to their wallets Must be nice to give yourself a pay raise . I know many people who would love to have that power )
Jack Fitzpatrick ☃️ on X: "Members of Congress would get their first pay raise since 2009, under the stopgap funding bill today. https://t.co/b8Bak9WxTx" / X (https://x.com/jackfitzdc/status/1869199456706682920)

Trump gave marching orders to his allies to vote it down . Now when the government shuts down the Repubs will be blamed. Speaker Johnson's job is again on the line because the only way he can prevent a shut down is to work with Hakim Jefferies to cobble a compromise bill that has enough Dem goodies to get them to help get the bill passed through a Trump-Musk road block .
This will infuriate the idiots caucus who have to vote in a Speaker for the new term on Jan 3 .This Congress has to have all it's ducks in a row by Jan 6 to certify the Trump election.

To make matters even more complicated . Trump and Musk wants Congress to raise the debt ceiling (good Dems that they are ) On Truth Social Trump said that any Repub who does not vote for a budget that includes a debt ceiling will face a primary challenge in 2 years.
Truth Details | Truth Social (https://truthsocial.com/@realDonaldTrump/posts/113676468224007678)

The idea is that if the debt ceiling is raised this year ,it is on Clueless Joe's watch even though Trump is the one calling for it . Aren't we clever !

As far as Johnson goes ;Rep Tom Massie has already said he won't vote for Johnson. He is not alone . Again Johnson would probably need Dems to cross the aisle and vote for his to retain speakership. That would require a devils bargain with the Dems to get it done.

If Jefferies really wants to throw a wrench in the works he could tell the Dems to not cross the aisle . Or he could attempt to negotiate a power share arrangement . Great . Repubs always find a way to screw themselves .

some more doozies in the CR

Congress decided that Obamacare sucks so badly that they wrote in an opt-out for members of Congress They will instead use the Federal Employees Health Benefits Program ;a program subsidized by us schmucks

The government would foot the whole bill for rebuilding the Francis Scott Key Bridge that was damaged by a freighter .
cost $2 billion

$15 million for the eradication of feral pigs.

Assist juvenile delinquents in getting driver's licenses .

Solving the homeless crisis by no longer calling the homeless "homeless"

continue funding government censorship into next year. This is very ominous .I smell a caving in on this most important issue

This constant scramble at the end of the year is an irresponsible joke .No matter how this train wreck ends ;a major priority would be to FINALLY go into the next fiscal year with a budget passed. If not they will continue to tweak Madam Mim's budgets .

What Congress was trying to ram down our throats was swifty exposed by citizen journalists on X People are calling Musk an unelected co-president. But all he really did was retweet what others who were actually reading the bill were posting . People then called their Reps to voice their outrage.

To borrow a Dem phrase they often use.......this is what democracy looks like.

Now yesterday a whittled down version of the CR was voted on .... one that Trump gave his stamp of approval to . Still a coalition of so called conservative lawmakers voted against it Politics is the art of the possible. It is not possible for them to get a "pure " bill at this time . They should take a lesson from Reagan who suggested that if he got 80% of what he wanted he would take it and then come back for 20 % later

“Continuing Resolution” is the fig leaf Congress stitches together in order to conceal, or at least divert attention from, its failure to do its job and provide a fiscally sound budget in a timely manner. It has happened often in recent decades because the self-serving deadbeats we elect to govern us are, well, self-serving deadbeats. Did you know that the last time the United States had a proper budget was 1996 ?"

The ever-Continuing Resolution - The Spectator World (https://thespectator.com/topic/ever-continuing-resolution-congress-doge/)

That would be when Newt was Speaker . But for many years now Congress has passed continuation of Madam Mim's agenda

TDS is so 2016 . Piling on Trump doesn't work anymore. So what is a lib to do ? There is a new villain to demonize. Move over Trump . Time for some Musk Derangement Syndrome. (MDS)

Musk was at one time the darling of the left. He was at the forefront of green technology. He showed that you could build a successful cool EV .(even though only the well off could afford it)

Then he did the unpardonable. He purchased Twitter ;exposed the full extent of the Censorship Industrial Complex for us to see. He allows free speech on Twitter (one of the many individual rights the lefties despise) .
And the biggest sin is that he has signed up with Trump to bring efficiency to the leviathan.

They now proclaim how dare he !! We did not elect him. ( nor did we elect George Soros who influences progressive policy. nor did we elect all the lobbyists who walk the halls on Congress making sure that the end of the year CR is padded with Christmas cookies .)

All Musk did was open up Twitter now X to people to speak freely . Citizen Journalists went to work dissecting the 1500 page "continuing resolution" that was anything but "continuing" given all the new goodies that the House leadership ;waiting until the last possible moment ;padded the bill with before unleashing it on Reps who were not going to read it.
Mind you ;before the padding it was 20 pages long.

(1) Eric Daugherty on X: "We have to be clear here. The bill on the left is what would've passed without Elon Musk and our voices on 𝕏. The bill on the right is what did pass. https://t.co/6Ho4sq4mqU" / X (https://x.com/EricLDaugh/status/1870244136474841461)

https://pbs.twimg.com/media/GfRxBxuXQAA7ztv?format=jpg&name=900x900

The X folk read it in short order and posted comments that Musk dare to retweet. That mobilized the unwashed masses to call their Reps .

(1) Geiger Capital on X: "All Elon did was read a bill, post on a public platform that the reckless spending in it was unacceptable, ask others to contact their representatives if they agreed, and made clear that he will help primary Ds + Rs who support it… This is called representative government." / X (https://x.com/Geiger_Capital/status/1869943337756557569)

Well that is unacceptable Here are some MDS examples

(1) Libs of TikTok on X: "Rep Rosa DeLauro (D) has a meltdown over Elon Musk https://t.co/C2sYHQfnuA" / X (https://x.com/libsoftiktok/status/1869898279716049128)

(1) Wall Street Mav on X: "The next two years sound awesome !!! Quote: “Can you imagine what the next two years are going to be like?” “there's a tweet from an individual ... who threatens members on the Republican side with a primary, they succumb?” https://t.co/Nu7SOT7RC6" / X (https://x.com/WallStreetMav/status/1869901693581733946)

(1) Chris Murphy 🟧 on X: "We had a deal to avert a shutdown. Musk et al blew it up because it didn't help billionaires enough. They wrote a new bill to cut cancer treatment for kids and grease a new tax cut for the rich. That failed too - and now they're panicking because everyone is seeing the grift." / X (https://x.com/ChrisMurphyCT/status/1869955797863805099)

Musk and Vivek state their goal is trimming the government by $2 trillion. That is ambitious and unlikely due to entitlement spending. I'd be happy with a balanced budget in the first year along with permanent deregulation measures.

That would spur an economic boom we have not seen in years .

The coalition of idiots in the House could screw up Trump's certification on January 6.
There is no guarantee that they will vote for Speaker Johnson when Speakership votes are cast on January 2.

There is also no guarantee that any of the Dems will cross the aisle . In fact I think Minority leader Jeffries would jump at the chance to deny Trump certification.
The 2023 revolt lasted 5 days before Johnson was selected. That was the longest speaker vote since 1859

Now I understand why some of the Repub hardliners would prefer another Speaker. Because of the thin margin of their majority Johnson has had to wheel and deal with the Dems .Unlike the Dems who vote in lock step (except sometimes the SQUAD ) ;the Repubs have shot themselves in the foot and the bills that have made it through the House are watered down at best.

That has rightly upset them. The answer to that is to win the mid-terms ....something that could be close to impossible .Typically the majority loses seats in the mid-term elections . Right now their majority is a total of one given defections to Trump's team ;the seats that went to the Dems in the California election steal this year; and sudden resignations ( unlike the Senate where Guvs pick replacements ;vacancies in the House must have special elections .)

Trump is not pleased with Johnson either . He probably could do arm twisting if he was so inclined . But who knows ? Trump may want a change of leadership in the House.

Bottom line is that if this issue is not resolved by January 6 then there will be a delay in certifying .

The fact is that Mike Johnson inherited a disaster when Matt Gaetz and several of my colleagues teamed up with 208 Democrats to remove Kevin McCarthy, which will go down as the single stupidest thing I’ve ever seen in politics. Voting on Speaker of the House begins today. Speaker Johnson has a 2 vote cushion. Rep Massie already said he is a no vote. The Dems won't help Johnson. They would love to see chaos that delays Trump in any way.

Trump is doing some arm twisting . Some members of the coalition of idiots like MTG have indicated they are on board; so hopefully this does not become a long drawn out process. The election needs to be certified . Trump's appointments need to be confirmed so he can hit the ground running.

They started with a 5 seat majority . Then they had resignations of Gaetz ;Waltz and Stefanik that will need to be filled by a special election.

They have 2 votes to spare .Trump appears to understand his role with the legislative branch better . His first term he relied on Paul Ryan and Yertle too much . Johnson ,Thune ,and VP Vance will herd a more disciplined GOP group of cats .

Putting the Repub majority further in jeopardy ;Rep Mark Green who is the House Homeland Security Chair ;has announced he is leaving Congress as soon as possible after the final budget bill is passed . He says he's been offered a job too good to pass up . Gov. Bill Lee has to call a special election within 10 days after the vacancy is official, with the general election to be held between 100 and 107 days after that. The seat is considered safely Republican. If all is done promptly it still means the Repubs will have one vote short for a few months .
