There is a song I heard on a commercial. I believe it is sung by Karen Carpenter. But I can't seem to locate it. The opening lyrics are as follows... What are you doing for the rest of your life. North south east and west of your life. What is the title of this song?

I know the commercial you are referring to and I know the song. Haunting isn't it? My father owned a number of records with this song on them. It was written in 1969 as part of a score of a movie entired The Happy Ending, by Michel Legrand (music), & Marilyn and Alan Bergman (lyrics). Here is a link to the sheet music:

That is not Karen Carpenter singing the song. I do not believe she ever recorded it. I do know that many, many famous singers sang that song, Barbra Streisand, Frank Sinatra, Shirley Bassy, Sarah Vaughn. I am sure there were many others. It has been rerecorded many times over the years and I have heard a lot of them. It has been driving me nuts trying to figure out who is singing it. I believe it might be Alison Moyet who recorded it in 2004, but I am not 100% positive because I am not familiar with her work. You can listen to it here and decide for yourself:
