Saw this in the late 80s, I think, so please forgive the lack of details.

The story centered around a character who had been put into some sort of sleep/hibernation 1000 years before the start of the main story. He was put into hibernation by a powerful being that was good 1000 years ago but predicted that it would one day become evil itself, and would thus need some type of hero to stop it's future evil self.

Again, I saw this as a kid, so I don't remember much beyond. Any help in identifying this movie would be much appreciated.
