What is doctor shopping? Or is there such a thing?

Yes, it does help to shop around for a doctor of any kind. Not all are the best at what they have advertised for their chosen practice. It depends on what kind of doctor you are speaking about and describing. Ask friends and co-workers who they would go to for treatment of any kind.
If it is a doctor who does any kind of psychological or psychiatric therapy, then shopping around for the right therapist can be relevant because not any one therapist may be the most skilled in treating the kind of mental health issues that a person may have, since there are many kinds of mental health issues.
For a medical doctor, in addition to speaking with friends and co-workers, I would advise trying the follow:

I think the Doctor shopping you are referring to is where you go to one Doctor to get medication then go to another Doctor for same medication in same month. Yes, that is a law it is illegal in a lot of states. Pharmacy computers are linked together to catch people doing such things now.

Yes, as roadrunner mentioned that is one method of doctor shoping the other is if you main doctor will not give you the drug you want, you go to several doctors till you find the one that will give it to you.
A well known radio talk show host was recently charged with that in Florida
