So let's say someone got into a car accident. I know that if I was in the car accident, that'd be firsthand and that if someone told me about it, that'd be secondhand. But what about if I saw the car accident but wasn't actually a person in the car?

If you're an observer, it would be a first-hand account but influenced by your pov. If you then went home and told your spouse about the accident, she'd be a second-hand reporter.
