I have a customer that wants an garage addition onto their home but I believe that pouring a monolithic slap up against an existing building may be the wrong choice due to cold temperatures in Buffalo NY. After pinning the new monolithic pad to the existing basement wall, I still feel pouring a traditional footer 4 feet down is the correct choice. Can anyone confirm my concerns?

I think I found what your looking for in the codes for NY.
Chapter 4 - Foundations (http://publicecodes.cyberregs.com/st/ny/st/b400v10/st_ny_st_b400v10_4_sec003.htm)
It shows the required footing for the structure your trying to build.

If you are in the city limits you need a permit and that will determine what can be done. I would never attach a slab to a home with a foundation, they will move at much different rates and crack the attaching point. Slabs move, foundations do not.
