It looks like a driver conflict.
Install the driver and go to system information it should show sharing
and conflicts. You have to change a resource the card is using. Do you have a built in soundcard on your mother board and you installed a separate sound card?

I don't think it's a driver conflict as I have had no problems until recently.it is a built in sound card on the motherboard and I'm using realtek ac 97 drivers as recommended.

Ok, you says that it will not be a driver conflict and the problem started recently. What did you do on your pc recently before getting this missing driver? I forgot to ask you one thing. Which Brand is your PC?

Hi,I did download some files off the internet, which I scanned before opening.I did notice though that one of the files, when opened, a command window opened for a split second.wether this has any thing to do with my problem I don't know.many thanks for your assistance by the way.

That could be a virus or trojan your antivirus missed. Not sure why it makes the audio driver disappear.
I'm sure you know the course, rRun a full scan. Run, Ad-aware, Spybot, ccleaner. Do all these in safe mode.

Try ad-aware and ccleaner also. Both are freeware software that works well.
