What is the chemical reaction? What is produced? Is it an acid or a base? Remember, Na is a very reactive metal and does certain things to water.

sodium metal and water reacts to form a BASIC solution of NaOH and hydrogen gas. The litmus paper would turn from red to blue under basic conditions such as this.
