I recently had a leaky faucet outside at the back of my house, when we tried to turn the handle to shut off the main water valve it would just spin. I had a plumber come out and replace the main water valve (easily accesible) and hose bib at back of house. He charged $500 for a little more than an hours work which I thought to be a little excessive. Am I wrong?

The best way to find out if that was an excessive charge for the job in your area is call a few local plumbers and contractors to compare prices.
This comparison process should have been done before you contracted this plumber actually.

I agree with Talaniman you should have discussed with the plumber before he was doing the job, I am not sure if you will get any thing from the plumber now, good luck.

Yes, it does sound high but first tell us who shut off the city main out on the street? I am assuming someone did this so the plumber could replace your main which is down steam from the city valve
