I have accidentally deleted an important file from the recycle bin, and I have done a system restore , is there anyway that I can retrieve the file??

If you did a system restore to a point a little before you deleted it, just go to the recycle bin and pull it to the desktop.

This is free. Try it out. For all you other geeks out there. THis place is offering about 6 great utilities for free.

As another expert said, the System Restore, if you have XP, is your only hope. I hope you have your computer set to do a System Restore.

This is not true. Try the software I recommended. It recovers files from FAT+NTFS+Others. I personally have not tried it but I believe as it claims. The software I use is called R-Studio (http://www.r-tt.com/). I didn't recommend it because its not free. However it will recover your file even if you Reformat the drive with a new file system and install another operating system.

Was this directed for him to give me negative feedback? I gave a recommendation that will solve his problem. If the software is not free (I don't see why it wouldn't be) then go to zdnet.com and find some freeware undelete or file recovery. Its all over the place. I have no financial involvement with the link I gave. It was honest help.

Well for him system recovery will be the easiest since it does make a restore point every single day.

The following is from Microsoft's explanation of System Restore:

"Every time you download or install a new game, application, or software update, you make changes to your computer. Sometimes that change may make your system unstable. Have you ever wanted to go back to the way it was? With System Restore, you can.

System Restore works a lot like the Undo command in Microsoft Word. You can use System Restore to remove any system changes that were made since the last time you remember your computer working correctly. System Restore does not affect your personal data files (such as Microsoft Word documents, browsing history, drawings, favorites, or e–mail) so you won't lose changes made to these files."

As you can see System Restor does NOT restore data files. Nor the Recycle Bin. If you did a System Restore you actually lessened the likelihood of being able to recover the file.

I would try the utility phroze recommended to see if that helps.

P.S. to phroze. I doubt if Fred's sig was directed at you. Fred has a reputation on several sites for wanting to rank at the top. So he panders for things that will raise his rankings. That's why he answers questions even when he doesn't know the correct answer (as shown here).

He ran System Restore.. It DIDN'T work.. Even Fredg's link throws doubt as to whether System Restore would even consider it important enough to restore..

Windows\System32\Restore\Filelist.xml on Windows Professional, or Windows\System32\Restore\Filelist.xml in XP Home Edition

Use the method given by Phrozen.. probably your best chance for any recovery at all!

Well not bad or inaccurate for say, just I thought he could go back just before he got the file, but I can't remember but there was a free program out somewhere to totally retrieve all the imformation lost after a full format not wipe if its wiped clean you are screwed.

I'm curious as to what files you got restored via a System Restore. As my quote shows, it does not affect data files. Maybe it restores the Recycle Bin. That wasn't clear and I'm curious to see if that can happen.

As long as they hadn't installed anything after the Restore Point they were going back to (that would have to be re-installed), it wouldn't hurt doing the System Restore and "may" help although everything says it probably won't. But, nothing ventured, nothing gained! :)

Very unlikely. Since the space occupied by the file was marked as unused its likely the defrag placed other data in that space.
