View Full Version : Changing clothes washer drainage

My current clothes washer drains via a flexible rubber hose into a utility sink of approximately 2 feet depth. This sink has a 'standard' drain pipe. I'm guessing around 2 inch diameter that just goes into the wall... pretty much a similar pipe drain setup as any sink around the house. I would like to buy a new washer, remove the utility sink, and have the drainage connected to the existing sink drain pipe. Is that a do-able connection or will it require special attention/fittings, etc?

Thanks much!

Yes, it is doable.

Your utility sink has 1 1/2" drain. Once you remove it, you will remove drain and P-Trap that used to serve the sink. You will install new 1 1/2" trap directly to the wall inlet using short nipple ( or piece of pipe ). On top of the trap you install 1 1/2" to 2" x 30" tall stand pipe. Hose from washer drain drains into this stand pipe.

In my area, plumbing Code calls for 2" washer drain and trap as new washers discharge water way too quickly and old 1 1/2" drains may not be large enough to absorb so much water in so little time. But we work in old houses with modern washers all the time and they do manage to drain without overflowing.

Should your 1 1/2" drain prove to be not adequate than you would have to upgrade your drain to 2". But I think chances are on your side.

Hope that helps
