Hello, My wife has been living in the US for 5 years and we have been married for 4 years. She was granted asylum 3 years ago and was issued her green card 2 years ago. We were informed, by the office that issued her green card, that an asylee can backdate her permanent residency status by 1 year prior to the date the green card was issued. Essentially giving credit for the 1 year waiting period from asylum to green card. This means she has actually been a permanent resident for 3 years. Now she wants to become a citizen and being the spouse of a citizen she can apply for citizenship after 3 years of permanent residency. So, can she apply for citizenship now?
