Ran engine low on oil. It started clanking and then quit. Not a knock like a rod bearing, a clanking or rattle. Added oil, adjusted valves and restarted engine.
It made the same noises and then quit and would not restart. It turns over freely, but will not restart. Acts like it's not getting fuel. Any idea where I should start looking?

Hi,
I would say that your rod has probably come apart. Air-cooled engines run a couple of hundred degrees hotter than an automotive engine. Rods either stick at the crankshaft journal or the cap comes loose and apart in a lack-of-lubrication scenario.
Peace,
Clarke
