The smell just started 2 days ago. It IS NOT rotten egg smelling. Neighbors don't have a smell to their water.
A month ago we discovered a busted pipe under our house. It turned out to be a pipe that led to the hot water heater. I assume that hot water actually runs through it as our gas bill was higher than usual. We are on city water. This turned into a homeowner's claim and 4 rooms had to have new flooring laid. Kitchen, laundry, den and living rooms. The hot water heater is in the laundry room and is approximately 8 years old. The water heater had to be detached and reset for the new flooring. When we first used the hot water after everything was back going the water was brown for a day. It cleared up and everything was fine. We had Lowe's install the carpet in the den and living room. The carpet install wasn't done until 2 weeks after the rest of the work was completed. The same day the carpet was installed is the same day we noticed the smell to the water. We have no idea what to compare the smell to. It's not very strong except for when the washing machine is filling up. It happens in all faucets in the house The hot water and cold water both have the smell. I don't know if it's a chemical smell or what, my husband says it almost smells like a burning smell, but I don't agree. The water is clear and when I fill up a cup of water and take it outside to smell, I smell NOTHING! It even affects our toilet water. It's strange to us that this smell started when the carpet was laid and it smells similar to the smell that the carpet pad had which was a really strong smell. ANY SUGGESTIONS?
