When the sump pump runs the sink in the bathroom gurgles. I've read enough of the related postings and have had past experience to believe that it's a venting issue. I am wondering what would be the simplest solution.
We've had this problem in the past, but after re-decorating the bathroom and having the sink drain line replaced to the main, everything was quiet for about 6 years. Just over a month ago, the sump pump was replaced and very recently the noise has started up again.
Any ideas?

You are correct. What's happening in that when the pump discharges it sets up a vacuum. This vacuum relieves it self through a vent out to the roof. If the vent's blocked then the vacuum relieves itself through the nearest trap. The sound you hear is air being vented through the water in the trap.
The repair is to snake out the lavatory vent and clear it. Good luck Tom

Should the sump pump be vented independently?

Should the sump pump be vented independantly?
No, Sump pumps do not need to be vented. However, all traps need access to a vent and your lavatory appears to be blocked off from it. Cheers, Tom

I had a similar problem.. sump pump runs.. sink gurgles, sewer gas coming out. There are 2 vent pipes on roof of house;one with the toilets and showers, one with kitchen sinks and sump pump from the clothes washer in basement. The toilet vent stack is 4inch pipe. The vent on the kitchen sinks and sump is 4inch on the roof but as you look down inside the pipe from the roof it transitions to a 1and1/2 inch vent pipe. Definitely a vent sizing issue and reason for the gurgle and gas out of kitchen sinks. What I did was cut sink drain pipe on a horizontal run before the sewer pipe and installed a sewage check valve on the sink line in the basement. The check valve has a rubber or plastic flap that opens when I use the sink under the force of the water going out and closes when the sump comes on because the air pressure from the sump pump line pushes it shut when running. No more stink no more gurgle. $17.00 at home depot took 20 minutes to install. Saved me having to install another vent line.worth it,works fine Mike
