I'd recommend calling an exterminator... carpenter ants wouldn't bee there if they didn't find the right conditions... they like moist wood.. meaning you have something wrong that needs correcting that is enticing themn to be there. Meaning water infiltration from inside or outside. THey know what to look for and can see where the issues are most times....so corrective action can be made.

If you're finding them in the bathroom, are you also finding little bits of sawdust? When they nest in wood they will clean out their tunnels and throw the debris out. If you are not finding frass (chewed sawdust and other debris) then look outside of that room, in the attic and/or crawlspace. Being able to localize the nest will make the exterminator's job much easier and allow you to negotiate a better price. Odds are highly against you being able to get rid of them yourself.

Do you have any vents near the floor or up to 3'? Dryer, etc. Any cellar windows blocked with leaves, or too much growth against the foundation? Signs of wet joists or beams under the bathroom or nearby?
My last house was an open door for mice and bugs. My current house is pretty well sealed. Both built around 1970, both very rural.
