Have contacted my employer requesting a corrected w-2. they say its my error.
I had one month of income while living in Maryland. I moved to Pennsylvania in February. The company is reporting a large portion my state withholding in box 17 state income tax by line 18 local taxes. I planned on filing I both states paying more than I should in one and waiting for the refund from the other. My problem is the local income tax does nothing towards increasing my refund. Here are the figures
Md box 16 --3208 box 17 -- 232 any
Pa box 16 -32448 box 17 -- 996
Box 19 --2331.66
Any ideas

The W2 says you earned $3208 while living in MD and had $232 withheld for MD taxes, and you earned $32448 while living in PA and had $996 withheld for PA taxes. I don't understand the entry in Box 19 - they should have included entries in boxes 18 and 20 as well - what's in those boxes?

I don't understabnd what you mean by this: "I planned on filing I both states paying more than I should in one and waiting for the refund from the other" - please elaborate. You will have to file in both states, as part-year resident in both, but I don't see why you would pay more than you should to either one?

I'm guessing, and we'll have to wait for the OP to reply, but perhaps he's thinking that because PA and MD are tax recipriocal states he only has to file a return in PA and that will automatically get him a refund from MD.

Mostproud: because you lived for a time in MD you will have to file a part-year resident retturn for MD, and wil owe income tax on your wages earned while living in MD. You also have to file in PA, and pay income tax to PA on your wages earned while living in PA. The reciprocal agreement between MD and PA provide that if you live in one state and work in the other you only have to file a tax return in yuor state of residency, which for you means filing part-year returns in both states.
