I am going to file my 2013 taxes (using turbotax) and after importing W-2 form and answering some questions it shows that I owe about a 1,000 $! My W4 has not changed from the previous year (I got refund the previous year). In 2013 I was on F1 status (3/4 of the year) and H1B (1/4 of the year). In 2012 I was on F1 the whole year. I suspect that is causing the difference and for 2013 the software thinks I was on H1B for the whole year and had to pay more taxes (which I didn't for most part since I was on F1).

Thanks :)

Due to the anti-discrimination clause in each tax treaty, your visa status has NO effect on the tax calculation. It is the same whether you are F-1 or H-1B. The only issue is whether you can claim the standard deduction, and whether you have a treaty exemption.

What DOES matter is the amount of money you earned in 2013 vice 2012. Please provide the earned income for BOTH years.
