Invasion of privacy? Fund raisers will depend on your location. Even if allowed, don't expect anyone but family or friends to contribute

If in the US, he can merely get an attorney appointed. You can have a fund raiser in many areas, but have to be clear, that it is not a donation and it is merely giving you or him money. The money is also taxable.
Most likely will not get anyone but family to give.

Invasion of privacy isn't a specific criminal charge that I've ever heard of. What exactly is he being charged with? And how do you know he didn't do it, aside from what he tells you? And what does his public defender say?

... The money is also taxable.

Income tax? No. It would not be earned income.
Gift tax? Possibly (taxable on donor), but I really doubt any donation would exclude the exemption amount ($14,000 per recipient).

I think what you are trying to say is that it wouldn't be deductible. That would be correct.
