Hi,

Last year I came to US in February 2013 to California and then I get transferred to North Carolina during Mid July 2013.

Now my question is,

While filing return, will I get back all the state taxes I have paid during the whole year as I have stayed in both the states less than six month ?

Saroj,

Not sure; it depends on how much you earned in each state and the expenses you claimed.

Hi,

Apologies for late response. I have earned around 22K in California and 20K in North Carolina. Both of these amounts are after tax.

You will have to report ALL of the income earned for the year and how much was earned in each state. You will file as a part-year resident for each state.

You will be taxed by California for the income earned in California and you will be taxed by North Carolina for the income earned in North Carolina, but your tax rate is determined by your overall income.

You will probably get some refund, but it will NOT be a total refund.
