In multi unit high rises, do the plumbing lines have to be copper or can it be abs drains and pex water lines?

Hi Phogan

The answer depends on what state you are in AND how many floors are involved in the high rise, but in most cases, you can only use copper and no-hub cast iron piping for waste pipe in commercial plumbing high rises. Pex is usually not approved, but is gaining in popularity and may someday be allowed.

If you absolutely must have the answer, contact a local plumbing inspector and ask him/her the question...they'll tell you the code in your area fast!

I retired back in 88 and we ran the drainage in cast iron, later we switched over to PVC but we always ran our water lines in copper. Regards. Tom
