Hi,
I am an indian f-1 status student
I am currently a student in virginia and I had got my w-2 forms. I wanted to know how much tax refund can I expect and is there any way to increase it.
I worked full time CPT for 3 months in virginia. I have been a GTA for 5 Months and for rest 4 months I was employed in a on campus Job.
My total income is around 19k
My fed tax is around 1900
My state tax is around 1620

Also is there any way I can get all of it as refund or more than what I will get if I file by myself.

You will NOT LEGALLY get all of it back, because both the U.S. and the state of Virginia have the right to tax income earned within their respective borders.

You WILL get a good part of the federal withholding back, because you get to claim the $6,100 standard deduction under Article 21(2) of the U.S.-India Tax Treaty. For the federal return, you need to file Form 1040NR-EZ and 8843. These forms MUST be mailed.

For Virginia, you file as a non-resident (which by law you are due to your international student status). The Virginia return can be efiled.
