Hi emillemarie,

It may seem like a very long time, but 3-4 months of trying to conceive is not considered unusual. While some people do become pregnant fairly quickly, others find it takes a year or so, which is perfectly normal.

With irregular cycles, your chances decrease a bit since you are not likely ovulating as often as the norm. First thing that you might consider is a preconception visit to your gyn/ob to discuss ways of maybe helping to regulate your cycles.

If you haven't already, you can also start trying to determine when you might be most likely to ovulate since that is the only time each cycle that you can become pregnant. There is much information online regarding ways of determining ovulation, but one would be to watch for changes in your cervical mucus or discharge. When your body is preparing for ovulation, the discharge will most often become more clear and fluid, this allows sperm to survive for a few days otherwise they die off fairly quickly.

Again, see your doctor to discuss your plans, be sure to make any lifestyle changes that you know would be healthy and wise while trying to become pregnant, and try not to get too discouraged.
