I would say you couldn't find a greater bunch of comedians anywhere but you forgot the oratory of Harry S Truman
“
Republicans approve of the American farmer, but they are willing to help him go broke. They stand four-square for the American home--but not for housing. They are strong for labor--but they are stronger for restricting labor's rights. They favor minimum wage--the smaller the minimum wage the better. They endorse educational opportunity for all--but they won't spend money for teachers or for schools. They think modern medical care and hospitals are fine--for people who can afford them. They consider electrical power a great blessing--but only when the private power companies get their rake-off. They think American standard of living is a fine thing--so long as it doesn't spread to all the people. And they admire of Government of the United States so much that they would like to buy it.”
― Harry S. Truman (http://www.goodreads.com/author/show/203941.Harry_S_Truman)

Oh its changed... for the worse. John F Kennedy doday would be too far right to be allowed in the Democrat party. In fact JFK would not even recognise the Democrat party of today.
In fact they should harness the power of his body spinning in his grave... it would power Washington DC. AND have a ZERO carbon footprint.

I can't imagine he would be allowed in the republican party either, given his background
I ask myself am I a conservative, By the standards of my nation; yes, but by the standards of your republicans; no. Did I oppose our form of universal health care when implemented; yes, but today, I think it is a good system that serves everyone well.
What I have come to understand is that some of my views when I was younger, hotter headed and ill informed, were incorrect. When AGW was first pushed I was of the opinion they were right, but subsequent facts and the benefit of hindsight has shown that not everything is what it appears to be. This is often the case in many political causes.
In my nation we have now have the members of the former government opposing policies they were in favour of when in office, and doing a flat spin whenever their cherished policies are unwound but given a few years they will be glad to be rid of the baggage of failed policies

I can say I know very little of your Healthcare system even after the posts I have read here... I can state I hate the British system... I hate the European system in general (way too much intimate knowledge of the Italian system which has a few good points but everwelming bad ones). Don't like anything about the Canadian system I've heard... and the one that's getting rammed down our throats is worse than all of them. And overwhelming numbers of people hate it now and those are growing by th day as they learn how much they have been lied to since it was rammed down our throats...
I like many people have gotten more conservative as I've gotten older because you learn nothing is free... someone gets bled dry for every handout given to someone... and as you work you way up the corporate and social ladder you find out its you at some point.
The people that think they should get bargain rates from anyone that does a job that requires skill, education and lots of experience... yet they rarely ever work for free themselves to those less fortunate than they are.
And unlike many I've spent enough of my adult life wading through the cesspool that some call govermment since its so concentrated into this geographic area its impossible to avoid it, and specifically when over 90% of your work for over 3 decades involves some part of the government.. Nope I wasn't born here or grew up here...I grew up several states away where life is very different. I came here after college. I stayed because of the job opportunities.
I've seen enough not only here but in Europe to laugh and shake my head at those who think polititians have their interests at heart or that believe anything that they are told.
Its not just here... but its true everywhere... what changes is just how ofter they let any truth slip out.

Smoothy I was just using some examples not trying to get the health care debate going again.
I don't doubt that there are bad systems and good ones. Some people think in bureaucratic terms, some do not. Some do not understand what can be accomplished by a small dedicated group or by just facilitating.

Me either... problem is most people have no way to know how often they are lied to ( and often get argumentative that they aren't being lied to )... and a misinformed populace can never make the right decisions, its as dangerous as an uneducated populace, and maybe even more so..

I am NOT a crook - Richard M. Nixon.
They all lie, thought you knew.

Of course they lie, or spin or whatever you call it; situational ethics. But we know this, so we do not believe all they tell us. sometimes it will unravel within a day, sometimes slower. We now have a service provided by the ABC called fact check. I'm expecting the government will find this political interference and a way to defund the ABC
