Now slow down there boy, he was following the example of Mandela who demonstrated that you didn't need war to overcome. Who knows, he may yet bring Cuba in from the cold and earn that Peace Prize. this is a new century and the hatreds of the last need to die. Wouldn't it be good if these was an accord with both Iran and Cuba, you could isolate North Korea

Yeah, shake hands with dictators, lie to your friends, that's the Obama foreign policy in a nutshell.

Maybe Raul should follow the Mandela example .

Didja hear what John McCain said about Obama shaking Castros hand?? He compared it to Nevile Chamberlain shaking hands with Hitler...

McCain is clearly wrong .... Shaking hands with Raul Casto is more like shaking hands with
Heinrich Himmler.

Raul Castro is an old man, better to sow the seeds now, so that when the Castro's are gone there can be reconciliation, afterall wouldn't you like to send some of those exiles home?

It is my hope that the people of Cuba rebel and expedite the process.

Did the emperor whisper to Raul "release Alan Gross immediately or the bombs start dropping !! " ? Nope I bet he didn't tell him that there is zero chance of normalization as Raul's goons beat up the 'Ladies in White '; and other protesters beaten and arrested as they demonstrated for the United Nations' Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

The news is not the handshake ...it's the secret talks the emperor has had with the regime for the last 6 months

Hello again, tom:

It is my hope that the people of Cuba rebel and expedite the process. It was EVERYBODY'S hope 50 years ago.. Somewhere around, let's say, 25 years ago, we should have realized that our sanctions against Cuba weren't gonna end with our hopes being fulfilled..

In FACT, the sanctions against Cuba have HURT the average Cuban MUCH more than it did the Castro's.. Yet, the Republicans would NEVER, NEVER acknowledge that fact, EVEN though we're gonna switch REAL quick when the Castro's die.

I dunno WHY Republicans do crap like that.

25 years ago, we should have realized that our sanctions against Cuba weren't gonna end with our hopes being fulfilled..
of course they weren't ...not with all our allies going around sanctions so they could have a vacation beach to go to.
Don't know why you bame it on Republicans though . For most of those years ,Congress was in the control of the Dems ,and 26 of those years ,the Presidency was in the hands of the Dems.
But my comment had nothing to do about sanctions ,boycotts ,embargos etc.
But since you brought it up .. You think that the dictator will suddenly release the people from his jackboot because American dollars are suddenly filling his coffers ? Dude !!
The US NOW is the biggest exporter of food to Cuba .. Has been since PRESIDENT BUSH opened food exports to the country . You think the Cubans are freer now as a result ?
But have no fear . I'm sure the emperor will unilaterally lift sanctions with nothing in exchange ;just like he's doing with Iran.

More on the embargo

Carter tried to normalize relations with Cuba by opening the US Interests Section (a de facto embassy) in Havana in 1977. result .....Fidel Castro orchestrated the Mariel Boatlift, which sent 125,000 criminals and mentally ill people to the United States.

2003 President Bush began to ease restrictions for visiting family members in Cuba, result ...he tightened the rules in 2004 in response to Cuba's crackdown against political dissidents.

The emperor relaxed the US travel policy in 2009 to allow unlimited travel to Cuba to visit family members. result ... That same year, the Cuban government arrested an American aid worker and sentenced him to 15 years in prison.

The fact is that trade with a government that has total control of the economy only benefits the dictators. The US already allows remittances ,which sends a $ billion in direct aid to Cuban families.

Suddenly, because of a handshake we are all upset about Cuba. get real, you even sanction the regime. You will get a real boom in the car industry when the door opens to Cuba and maybe they will teach you something about subsidised medicine

I know about their subsidized medicine . The cadres in the regime and the tourists gets the best medicine money can buy . Here is how the rest of the nation fares .
