Will your home insurance cover it? Did you file a claim with them?

But you will probably have to sue them if they are ignoring you. Do you have any documentation proving the damage?

It's probably easier to file an insurance claim in the long run.

The claim should be filed with the contractor's insurance carrier, if the contractor in fact, caused the damage.

I agree what documents and proof do you have that they caused the damage.

Is the agreement to replace in writing ?

But often you ask for their insurance career information, But may have to file a law suit before they will pay attention

Chuck is correct. Was there a contract? Did you verify their liability coverage? Is it a licensed contractor? Was it feasible to do the house renovations without damage to the carpet? I wouldn't count on a homeowner's policy to pay for these damages. My insurance company (homeowner policy insurer) wouldn't roll over and pay just because the renovation work wasn't properly insured as required by law in many jurisdictions. Either contact the "tradesmen" insurer and if no insurance, try to take legal action but be prepared to prove that the carpet damage was unavoidable if major renovations were required.
