My son has been in New Jersey County Jail for 208 days without an indictment. How long can they hold him without indictment or trial?

Hello J:

He can only be held for 72 hours WITHOUT being charged, and given bail. So, he HAS been criminally charged. Getting an indictment only bolsters the prosecutors case. If he's been charged with a felony, and I assume he was, a lawyer was appointed, or the court believes he has enough money to get his own. That lawyer is the person to ask.

Hopefully, he hasn't waived his right to a speedy trial.

If NONE of that happened, he needs a lawyer to get him out. If he HAS no funds, go visit the public defender.
