My wife and I are in the process of purchasing our fist home. I worked setting tile for years but never really plumbed new lines or much more than what was involved in replacing or adding fixtures to existing line that most of the time were never moved.

The home we are considering was built in 1933 and colonial brick style on a septic system. On the second floor there are four bedrooms and only one bath. We'd like to add a full bath directly behind the wall of the existing bath.

My question is, how involved is it to plumb into all of the existing lines including shower/tub drain line, hot/cold water lines, and the toilet drain line? Is this a significant project and can we share lines this way?

A full after build bath is indeed a significant project. After you look at everything you may decide to do some work yourself and sub other work. You need to check with your local permitting Dept. to see what is acceptable for where you live. If permitted you may be able to do a back to back toilet, wet vents, AAV's etc. Based on age I would guess that you have cast iron drains and possibly steel piping. Obviously you will need to rip up some floors and walls, may have to do some floor joist strengthening, rewire etc. Spaces need to be fairly big to get a tub in since most houses of that vintage have small doorway. Get started right with good planning so you don't have later regrets.
