Approximately I had a surgical abortion two weeks ago. I then had sex the day after since I felt both physically and emotionally recovered, however, three days afterwards, I saw a brown discharge on my underwear and I was was seriously confused. I started a birth control (Gynera) the day of my abortion. Can anybody help me out?

You did what??

A surgical abortion is where they open your cervix and dissrupt the tissue on your uterus enough that the pregnancy can't continue. They either hoover it out or scrape it out or just generally mash things about. A little graphic but you need to understand the process to comprehend the danger you've put yourself into.

The cervix, after this procedure, will not just instantly snap shut. It takes time to contract and close again. During this time it is a free flowing path from your vulva to your uterus. Possible contaminates could be pushed up into your womb by something thrusting through your vaginal canal. IE, a penis. Your womb is a fertile ground for both bacteria and the embryo. So if you have an infection in your uterus it could render you sterile or worse.

Your doctor should have told you something along the lines of, no sex for 3-6 weeks and no trying for a child for about 2-6 months depending. These NEED to be followed for your health. There are no nerves endings and thus no feeling in the cervix so you have NO idea if everything is okay there. You can't feel if you're okay there. You need to follow the instructions from your doctor.

Secondly, the birth control doesn't reach maximum effectiveness until AFTER the first month of taking it. You need to reach the proper hormone balance for it to be effective and during the first month this is all just ramping up and stabalizing. A secondary form of birth control should be used, i.e. a condom.

Lastly, the discharge. Your still seeing the results of the abortion pass through. It shouldn't be anything to be worried about. I am certain that the doctor that did the abortion told you this.

Please, give your junk a rest and waiting for a few weeks before you have sex again. Stay healthy.
