Assuming this is a real and valid debt that isn't past the statute of limitations,
Pay them what you owed them and you won't have to go to court? Or come to an agreement for something less they WILL accept that you can pay in full now before the court date. The less time you have the fewer options you have availible to you.
As far as going to work... if you are smart... you take the day off even without pay if you have to, to attend the court hearing... because they WILL win everything they asked for if you don't show up automatically by default.
They will then ask for and get a Writ of Garnishment and they will hound you for the rest of your life.....and take if from any estate if they don't manage to sieze it before then from any bank account you ever have or garnish your pay checks.
Take it seriously...its NOT a minor thing.

Did you mean to say avoid going to work or going to court. If you meant to say court, yes, you pay what you owe and get it in writing that they are dropping the suit. Or you negotiate a settlement, in writing.
Otherwise, no.
